Apr 10, 2009 - I never realized they used parachutes to recover them. I guess I always assumed they just burnt up in the atmosphere or something. This video is simultaneously awesome and nauseating (the spinning).

philmont709n2 Says:

Apr 17, 2009 - what is all the stuff raining down on the tank after it lands in the ocean?

Apr 26, 2009 - from 6:35 rain of metal debris hehe

pnktout Says:

May 28, 2009 - Its soo cool how quiet it is after separation.. then as the SRB's starts to enter the thicker atmosphere all sound wave hell breaks loose. :D

pnktout Says:

May 28, 2009 - The other streak you see coming up from the clouds in the distance is from the intial ground launch. Check out the newest SRB cameras from STS-125 hubble mission on NASA's Tube. There are some great shots of it as well.

fabmic Says:

May 28, 2009 - Nive vid, but the intertant is not the middle part of the tank but the gap between the booster and the tank. And the camera is fixed, doesn't really switch to any other position, but since the boosters spash down horizontally, you can see the parachutes overhead, as the camera still aims sideways.

Aug 24, 2009 - Nice SRB vid! I was watching another vid (STS125 ascent hi lites) SRB seperation, then noise: Is that coming from inside the SRB or debris hitting the SRB on the way down? Thanks for posting and the reply!

Oct 12, 2009 - coolest stuff I've seen in a long long time bro. the sound is what really makes it too. the eerie creaks moans in this giant metallic hull freefalling thru the outer reaches of the atmosphere - the twilight zone

Nov 2, 2009 - THAT was the COOLEST fucking space video I've EVER seen!! fuckin eh!

Nov 5, 2009 - OMG OMG OMG, is there any other videos like this one!!!!! I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!

plunderingthe7cs Says:

Nov 5, 2009 - I believe mostly it's just un-burned fuel from the booster (it's solid, looks and feels like a pencil eraser) but it may also have some packing materials (bags, etc.) from the parachutes mixed in there too. Not 100% positive so look it up before you quote me on that.

plunderingthe7cs Says:

Nov 5, 2009 - No. The intertank is in fact that corrugated surface on the external tank that the camera is facing. From this angle it just happens to also be between the tank and booster. The intertank is basically the connection between the liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen tanks. It also hides some structural members, electronics, and so on. Please feel free to wikipedia it if you have any doubts/further questions.

plunderingthe7cs Says:

Nov 5, 2009 - Also, the camera does change. When you see the parachutes opening up, the camera is oriented vertically upwards. During flight and separation, the camera is oriented horizontally and looking parallel to the ground.

plunderingthe7cs Says:

Nov 5, 2009 - The boosters do NOT splash down horizontally. They go in like a pencil with a napkin stapled to it (basically what they are). The nozzle is ejected before splash down and the business end hits first. Start watching at 6:30 to see the parachutes float to the side as the booster sinks into the water and settles on its side. Then they float oriented vertically in the water until the retrieval team gets there to tow them back to Cape Canaveral.

Nov 9, 2009 - Hal finally opened the pod bay doors...

mach25man Says:

Nov 14, 2009 - There are 3 different cameras mounted on each SRB. What Nasa puts out is a edited version of all three together.
