Oct 5, 2009 - You would have to cover each tier before stacking the cake. It would be too difficult (if not impossible) to cover a 3-tier wedding cake in one huge chunk of fondant. You would need a work surface wider than the cake is tall and it would be too difficult to roll that much fondant out and get it even all the way across. Not to mention that you'd kill your arms in the process! ~chuckle~ And pushing dowels through fondant is no different than pushing them through butter cream.

Oct 5, 2009 - Plain corrugated boards keep the cake from collapsing onto itself from the weight of the smaller tiers. Cake itself is very spongy and soft, and incapable of supporting its own weight. To keep the boards from sticking to the icing sprinkle a layer of shredded coconut onto the icing before placing the smaller tiers onto the larger ones. You can cut your own out of discarded boxes or you can buy them ready-made at craft stores. Wilton products are readily available and are very reliable.
