Sep 11, 2009 - Lack of acting has actually been a common criticism since opera's beginning. Even the complaint we hear today, "Normal people don't break out into song in real life" has existed for centuries. I think that acting is critical to make the feeling seem more real. As my music history teacher pointed out to us, when watching opera, there is an understanding between performers and audience that this is not exactly normal behavior, but sit back and enjoy it, and the burden of performance is on them.

Sep 13, 2009 - Actually, Pavarotti was no bigger than a full lyric tenor. He sang much too heavily throughout his career and that's what led to his loss of versitillity. I will agree with you however, on the statement that Florez reins supreme in this type of rep. He's a light lyric leggiero tenor and that's specifically the fach this role was written for so obviously he would fit it better than the pav.

Sep 22, 2009 - I'm pretty sure Pavarotti was a lyric tenor though, he didn't quite have the "vocal weight" that goes along with a dramatic tenor like Caruso, Domingo, or Corelli

Oct 17, 2009 - I also saw him in San Francisco. He was good, but not any better than another professional tenor. The soprano was something special though.

Nov 1, 2009 - I was there last night too - SF Opera with Florez and Damrau. Florez was inaudible. I have trying to remember when I have heard such a small voice before on that stage - in forty five years. I can't do it. Florez has a comprimario sized instrument. He's no Pavarotti. Or Lopardo or Harness either. The production was wonderfull. Damrau is the best in the world and the other characters were all fine - and audible.
esquibelle Says:
Nov 4, 2009 - I saw a recital tonite in Santa Monica andh is singing was astounding. The piano player so-so. But JDF was mindboggling. His voice is soft, but the delicacy and nuances are utterly beautiful. A real artist. True elegance.

danm90 Says:
Sep 11, 2009 - Absolutely. But I have to clear up that the two can't be compared, musically: Flórez is a lyric tenor and Pavarotti was a dramatic tenor. There is a huge musical difference between the two (and other) tenor types, and for that reason, they cannot be compared directly. Flórez is much better than Pavarotti was in lyric roles; Pavarotti much better in dramatic roles. But that's it. Compositions are tailored to one type of voice or another, and fr that reason, in this, Flórez reigns supreme.
