Nov 21, 2009 - Just finished spending time with relatives who live in Huntsville. BEAUTIFUL area!!! Here's the thing; those relatives are native to Alabama (gasp!!!) Also, saying that the only smart Alabamians are those who live around Huntsville is silly. Huntsville is a very nice part of the state, but you make it sound as if the rest of the state has its proverbial roof falling down around it. Like you, I've also been to about a dozen countries and I can say with certainty that Bama is not a bad place.

You're 100% correct about the living standards of the U.S. Out of all my travels, EVERY country I've visited had/did SOMETHING that I wish that the U.S. had/did (mandatory military, road system, etc), but generally speaking, Americans are better off than our counterparts. Again, I have 25-30 trips to about a dozen countries to back up my beliefs.

Nov 23, 2009 - The only times I have been in the South I felt very welcome. I go there on Habitat for Humanity builds and think there is a great sense of community. But I get the feeling they all live in a bubble and put too much emphasis on religion, family life and "being Southern". As I said, most are not very tolerant of alternative views, but it's hard to be combative given their niceties, hence the passive -aggressive comment.
