Nov 9, 2009 - ur fuckin dumb auto tune is a vocoder

reichmarshall Says:

Nov 9, 2009 - A vocoder is a self-contained effects device that lays the formant qualities of one source over the tonal qualities of another (see Kraftwerk and 70s sci-fi movies for examples). Autotune is a digital audio plug-in that forcibly corrects pitch. Both the approaches and the results are completely different.

moonlitmurloc Says:

Nov 12, 2009 - It's called an AUTO-TUNER, not a vocoder. tsk tsk

miguelin97223 Says:

Nov 13, 2009 - Auto-Tune is the name of a proprietary audio processor. In generic terms, that processor is called a vocoder.

Johnnnnayy Says:

Nov 14, 2009 - whoa how'd you get internet access on your boat?

AdamClease Says:

Nov 14, 2009 - wifi son

stratman9 Says:

Nov 18, 2009 - As several people have pointed out, it's NOT a vocoder that he uses. Reichmarshall provided a good explanation of the difference...pitch correction software like Autotune or Melodyne is what T-Pain uses, while a vocoder is what Daft Punk uses (around the world, harder better faster stronger, etc).

miguelin97223 Says:

Nov 19, 2009 - I disagree. Auto-tune still falls into a category of technology known as vocoders. You are basically telling me that a Band-Aid is not a bandage because bandages are what Jimmy uses while Band-Aids are what Tommy uses.

Fodera4 Says:

Nov 21, 2009 - yes, I will explain in simple english. vocoder = makes your voice match notes played on whatever instrument that's plugged into the vocoder. there are also effects that can be added to your voice, it could sound alot like auto-tune. auto-tune= automatic pitch correction to nearest note of selected key. Just a unit or a computer program, no instruments involved.

Fodera4 Says:

Nov 21, 2009 - talkbox = an intruments sound is sent through a tube into your mouth, unique sounds are created by talking and shaping your mouth differently into a mircophone so everyone can hear it.

TapesTree Says:

Nov 22, 2009 - The following other pieces of music technology are often confused with the vocoder: the Talk box (Sonovox), Auto-Tune, linear prediction vocoders, ring modulation, speech synthesis and comb filter. This is auto-tune.

aadamali1 Says:

Nov 22, 2009 - t-pain an ok actor

stratman9 Says:

Nov 23, 2009 - Fodera offers a good explanation of why auto-tune is NOT a vocoder. Vocoders apply formants from one source (i.e. speech) to another 'carrier' source (e.g. a synthesizer). What auto-tune does is alter the pitch of a single source (e.g. voice). I gave the example of Daft Punk vs T-Pain to show how different a vocoder sounds from auto-tune.

miguelin97223 Says:

Nov 23, 2009 - @ stratman9: you can preach the gospel of Fodera all you want, but that doesn't make it right. you say that vocoders apply formants from one source to another carrier source. but think about what that means. it really means that you are applying a series of pitch changes; some low shelf, some high shelf, and some band. so: in graphical terms, a vocoder simply deletes, minimizes, or increases the pitch of each portion of wave to match limits of the carrier source. auto-tune does the same.
