Oct 10, 2009 - oblivion has a pretty well written storyline too i think, its also aided by the fact that there can be around 20 different story lines going on at once, they could all interwine and they could all have sub plots and backstory's for them.

Nov 4, 2009 - your right.... Xenosaga is to me the best story ever. it is a video game and it has moved me more than any novel, movie, or show. this is a game with a good story, but most Xenosagas are discontinued and did not sell alot. the gameplay was good as well so i dont know why....

Nov 5, 2009 - Superb, and best of all, I could understand what the Hell you were SAYING. Most imitators are too concerned with trying to speak fast to speak coherently. I feel the same way, and I absolutely despise the commercial aspect of media, because indeed, things have to sell in order to be backed. Less of a problem in movies, but not a none-problem either, because as Fox has demonstrated in the last decade, bean counters are allowed to interfere with artistic decisions. Loved the support for HL2 btw!

Nov 9, 2009 - Agree wtih you. He actually did a really good job at expressing his views. I actually really don't like Zero Punctuation because he talks too fast, puts random stuff all over the screen and seems more interested in making a societal referance rather than actually making a point. I pretty much only buy games with a good storyline (which means, as you can imagine, I don't have many games one my shelf). It's suprising how few high quality games came out for the original Xbox.

Nov 17, 2009 - Such a great write-up. An ideal point I think is that storytelling should go hand in hand with the gameplay, without impeding on the experience. A recent game I can name "Uncharted 2" has a compelling story and some really awesome gameplay that compliment each other. Whereas another game like "Metal Gear Solid 4" has solid gameplay mechanics, but the hours of exposition heavy cinematics don't quite feed on the gameplay as they are overwhelmingly longer than the gameplay.

Nov 17, 2009 - I think the best direction for video games to go in in terms of Art is not that of narrative. I think the best thing to do is use gameplay mechanics themselves to portray meaning rather than use a story.

Nov 21, 2009 - Amazing how many people believe storytelling in games is something new that's slowly developing. In truth, adventure games were at the height of their popularity in the 80s and early 90s. Floyd cites SMB as some sort of turning point in storytelling, but A Mind Forever Voyaging was released in the same year! It's like PC gaming never EXISTED for some people until very recently. Writers today have problems writing because they SUCK AT WRITING. Has nothing to do with trying to "figure it out."
