Jun 24, 2009 - Because there are so many stars, just looking up and taking a snapshot of our own galaxy shows nearby stars in all stages of birth, life and death. That observational work has been going on for the last 400 years since Galileo first pointed a telescope to the stars, most intensely in the last 150 years since photography was invented. We did NOT learn all this in the last 15 years. Most of the science presented here was done before Hubble flew. Hubble simply allows us to see it more clearly.
longlakeshore Says:
Jun 24, 2009 - Think Hubble is expensive? We(US) have DOZENS of telescopes the size of hubble in orbit, all looking DOWN at Earth. They're called spy satellites and we've spent more money on them than it cost to go to the Moon. So I hope you won't begrudge astronomers one hubble size scope looking out at the stars instead! ; )

Jun 24, 2009 - true 15 years to a star thats billions of years old thats like one second of our lives lol
longlakeshore Says:
Jun 25, 2009 - It's not a phony time line. The observational science and mathmatics behind it are exceptionally accurate. Cepheid variables tell us the distance to nearby galaxies, and knowing the redshifts of those nearby galaxies allows us to estimate the distance to all other galaxies. The universe AS WE OBSERVE IT WITH TODAY's TECHNOLOGY really is about 14 billion years old. Geology and geochemistry tell us the Earth is 4.6 billion.

Jun 29, 2009 - longlakeshore, you need to get your facts right on how many spy satellites are orbiting. You would be surprised to learn they are not the size of the Hubble telescope, but much smaller.
longlakeshore Says:
Jul 4, 2009 - slipstream, if you have the facts post them... i thought not.
slipstream1802 Says:
Jul 4, 2009 - longlakeshore.....here are the true hard facts do a search 'QuickBird or Worldview-1 or 2 or the best one which was built for Al Gore; Triana which were all made by Ball Aerospace. you can see size is smaller than hubble and resolution is very good.

Jul 12, 2009 - we should send a tiny prob out like really small, that way if anything is out there and hiding from us, least we will have a better chance to catch them by surprise!! :) any1 agree? send a tiny little prob like the size of a bee or something :)
longlakeshore Says:
Jul 14, 2009 - I was referring primarily to the later model Keyhole satellites (KH-11,1213). Tho most are no longer flying, they are of Hubble's generation(70s, 80s, 90s), all have similar weight/size/cost to Hubble and have mirrors at least the same size as Hubble if not larger. Tho there's much we don't know much about what's orbiting now because of secrecy, you are correct: I should have used past tense when referring to how many big-mirror spy satellites were flown.

Jul 17, 2009 - So, if the sun converts hydrogen into helium, does that mean the sun has a very high squeaky voice like the Chipmonks? :/
mini7donkey Says:
Jul 19, 2009 - can you hear helium? No!
neverhoodyn Says:
Aug 7, 2009 - I really doubt they cost more than the first moon landing project. Apollo 11 costed about ONE THOUSAND BILLION dollars.ONE THOUSAND BILLION.
longlakeshore Says:
Aug 8, 2009 - You're equating NASA's entire budget as the cost of going to the moon.
soulflynlb Says:
Aug 16, 2009 - beautiful images captured by hubble..... almost hard to believe they are actual photos.
meadeETX125pe Says:
Aug 17, 2009 - neverhoodyn Don't be stupid ! Apollo 11 cost $355 Million in 1969 which equates to $1.75 billion in todays money. Where did you come up with that figure ?
Jazzywho86 Says:
Aug 23, 2009 - your wrong but why did you say one thousand billion why not just say one trillion... I'm sorry I corrected you I just couldn't help it

Sep 24, 2009 - ANyways spending BILLIONS lokkinf for "another life" and not helping here on your OWN planet ppl that are dying from HUNGER. Nearly one million people died in Ethiopia in 1984-5 in a famine caused by drought, many children.
